We're working together for a healthy harbour.
Whangamata Harbour Care is a community-based volunteer group, whose focus is to protect and restore our beautiful harbour - including all of the native, living species found within it, and around it. We want to leave a pristine harbour with a rich biodiversity, so future generations can also enjoy it.
What we do

What is it about birds, that we love? If you have the time, to sit and watch, they are actually very fascinating in their behaviours. And our harbour, has an abundance and a variety of bird species. But how can we ensure their survival?

Restoring native vegetation is a core part of our work. By planting species that belong to our coastal and estuarine ecosystems, we improve habitat quality, support native bird populations, and strengthen the resilience of the harbour environment.

If left to their own devices, our mangroves would soon choke up all of our harbour. This means they would also destroy the harbour birds feeding grounds, by suffocating shellfish, crabs and all the bio-diverse species that we have left in the harbour.

We're run an annual spring clean around the edges of the harbour.
We engage with local schools to educate them on conservation and environmental projects.
